Where the unit fits on a West Town lot
The oldest blocks of Ukrainian Village and Wicker Park have lots so narrow that the gangway between houses is barely wide enough for a person, and that dictates placement. If the alley reaches the rear yard, the unit rides in that way and sits on the garage apron or a paved corner of the yard. If the rear yard is fenced off by a new garage or a coach house, the only option is the front, which means a CDOT public-way permit for the parkway or parking lane that the contractor pulls. Bucktown's newer construction, especially the blocks near the elevated trail, often includes a rear parking pad where the unit takes one space.
Frame-house rehabs, garage-to-coach-house conversions and full teardowns on these blocks keep units in place for six months to a year.
The Kinzie corridor and warehouse conversions
South of Grand Avenue, the Kinzie industrial corridor still houses food producers, printers and contractors' shops alongside the loft conversions and studio buildings replacing them. A conversion job there puts three or four standard units and a handwashing station inside the loading area, serviced twice weekly, while the working plants keep a single unit near the dock. Trucks are the normal traffic on those streets, so delivery hours are flexible in a way they are not on Division or Milwaukee.
Street festivals, six corners and delivery timing
West Town's commercial streets, Division, Chicago Avenue, Milwaukee and Damen, close for street festivals from late spring into fall, and those events line the closed blocks with standard units, ADA accessible units and handwashing stations delivered the night before under the organizer's city permits. On ordinary days the six-corner intersection at Milwaukee, North and Damen is a bottleneck by nine, so rehab deliveries in Wicker Park and Bucktown go early. Weekly service shares a day with Logan Square and Humboldt Park.
Winter in these narrow yards means shoveling a path to the unit, which crews handle, and antifreeze in the tank, which we handle.
