Getting units onto the medical campuses
The hospital and the veterans campus on First Avenue are the largest employers in Maywood and the largest source of contractor work, with parking deck repairs, clinic renovations, utility tunnels and new outbuildings in progress almost continuously. Each campus has a contractor entrance, a badge or check-in process and a facilities contact who says where units may sit, usually inside a fenced lay-down area away from patient drop-offs. Our driver books the gate time, delivers on the Eisenhower loop, and services on a weekday morning before the visitor lots fill. Deluxe flushing units with handwashing stations are the norm on these campuses because of the healthcare setting.
The forest preserve grove across First Avenue stays off limits for placement, but the county's own trail and picnic grove projects there order units through the county contractor.
Maywood's seasons
Spring brings river flooding to the low blocks near the Des Plaines, and units on the east side wait for the water to recede before delivery. Summer brings the high school's stadium events, the village's festival at the park on Fifth Avenue and church anniversaries along Madison Street, plus the rehab season on the blocks between Lake Street and Roosevelt where investors are bringing back the old frame houses. Fall is when the village's street program and the Metra station area work wrap up before the freeze.
Placing a unit on a Maywood lot
Residential lots here are wider than in the city and most have alleys, so a rehab unit goes in the rear yard by the alley gate with the truck servicing from the alley. Where an alley is missing or blocked, the driveway near the street works. Village hall on Fifth Avenue expects sidewalks and parkways clear during construction, and Maywood has been active about code enforcement on rehab sites, so keep the unit inside the lot line and the pad tidy.
On winter rehabs, a unit against the garage wall survives the wind better than one in the open yard, and the tank gets antifreeze at each visit.
